An example for exploring limits with partners is the NeW-VIEUW project – funded within the Eurostars program, the three partners Covesion Ltd. (UK), Fraunhofer IPM (GER) and HighFinesse GmbH (GER).
The project team has developed a demonstrator that converts Mid-IR light into the NIR range, enabling measurements with the most accurate wavelength meters. By measuring the wavelength of the pump laser for the PPLN waveguide crystal as well as the converted light, the original Mid-IR wavelength can be calculated with high speed (up to 500 Hz) and accuracy (< 10 MHz).
The system consists of a Upconversion module (1),
a Wavelength Meter (2) and a multichannel switch (3).
Fig. 1: Benchmarking data of the NeW-VIEUW demonstrator with an OPO generating an idler at 3.284 μm with a pump wavelength at 780 nm. The corresponding OPO signal wavelength is at 1023 nm.
The figure shows the frequency difference between the measured OPO signal frequency and the measured upconverted OPO idler frequency. Both are supposed to be the same due to energy conservation. The demonstrator is well within the target accuracy of 10 MHz.
Fig. 2: Frequency distribution of the first figure showing are readout with FWHM of approximately 1 MHz.
Both graphs show that exceptional accuracy can be achieved by the concept realized in the NeW-VIEUW demonstrator.
